6th Grade Ancient World History

Donnetta Schaaf - Washington Middle School

 Prep Period – 10:17 – 11:07

Class Description: Your minds will be challenged this year as we learn about ancient civilizations beginning with early man and moving up through the Dark Ages.  We will discover the people, events, and special accomplisments of each civilization and how they left their mark on a changing world.  The civilizations we will be studying include the Mesopotamians, Phoenecians, Hebrews, Chinese, Africans, Mesoamericans, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and the early Middle Age Kingdoms.  We will also be studying geography and learn how the relationship between people and their environment has helped shaped world history.

Goals For This CourseIt is my hope that you will realize the importance of social studies in lifelong learning, recognize the contributions of early civiliaztions, and demonstrate an understanding of how civilizations form and the role they have played throughout history.

History Materials: Organization is the biggest key to having a successful year. Each day, you will be expected to bring your textbook, your agenda, pencils, a correcting pen, and your history binder with your two-pocket folder and manila folders inside.  We will be working very hard to help you learn to keep your assignments, notes, Daily Oral Geography, worksheets and homework organized.

Daily Assignments:   There will not be an assignment given every day.  However, when an assignment is given, I expect it to be done on time. If homework is handed in late it will result in a lower grade.

AbsencesWhen you have been absent, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed, get any materials that were passed out, and get your work made up in a timely manner.

Quizzes: There will be short section quizzes typically following each section in the chapter. There may also be unannounced quizzes.

Tests: Each student will be assessed over concepts learned following each chapter.  There may also be unit tests following each unit.

Projects: Throughout the year, you will be completing projects.  Several of these projects may be group efforts. You will be expected to particpate and a portion of your grade will be on how well you worked with the others in your group.

Grading Scale:         93 – 100 = A

        • 84 – 92 = B
        • 74 – 83 = C
        • 65 – 73 = D
        • 0 – 64 = F

I am genuinely excited for this year and hope you are too. Prepare yourself for a journey through ancient world history!
