Text – Holt Mathematics Course 2

This math book consists of twelve chapters. This is the order I used last year: Chapters 1-3, 4 (Lessons 1-3 only), 8, 7(L5 Box-and-Whisker), 6, a unit on metrics/fractions/ruler skills, 9, and 10. We will cover as much of the book as I can, but I also add supplemental materials.

We go over the examples of the skills covered in the first two pages of each individual lesson orally together.  I will pick and choose a variety of problems from the next two pages for homework.  At the end of the second page is a boxed-in section titled “Test Prep and Spiral Review”. Those problems will be assigned, too, as they review previously covered skills.

Homework help is available for those who have access to a computer and the Internet. On the top right of the first page of the lesson’s Exercise page is Homework Help Online.  The address www.go.hrw.com (Holt, Rinehart, Winston the book publisher) is given with codes for the lesson in which help is needed.  The site will ask for a KEYWORD.  That is the MS7 1-1 or whatever chapter and lesson assistance is needed.  One of the resources available is a tutorial, in which one of the book’s authors will explain the skills of that lesson as if teaching a class.  The directions say to click on the video if you need a tutorial lesson. There are problems to work.  You may also click for more problems on a skill.  There is a section for parents as well.

Another helpful assistance with homework is that there are selected answers in the back of the book beginning on page 784. Work a similar problem (usually an odd numbered problem since those are the ones with answers given) and then check to see if the answer is correct. If a similar problem can be correctly worked, then probably the student can work the assigned problem correctly.

Reviews occur halfway and at the end of chapters.  Various testing skills are taught and a chapter practice test is at the end of each chapter.

I am available for extra help before school, during homeroom, my study hall class time (although those students’ needs come first) and noon recess when I’m not on duty. (I write when I have duties on the board.) I stress that students come see me if they are having problems, or need some extra help.  Write a note if your child needs to come in for help before school if they are worried about coming in early. Usually teachers know I have kids coming in. They had better be in my room if checked up on.

7th Grade Math Homework

If a student is using class time wisely, a minimum amount of homework will need to be completed out of class. There will of course be some assignments that require more time, and some needing a few problems finished at home.

Students may also want to brush up on math facts by spending some time going over flash cards at home. Reviewing skills covered before tests is highly recommended.

I am available to help students before and after school, and during the noon recess time when I'm not on duty. Arrangements for help can easily be made.

Peer tutors are also available. The Study Center is also open every morning at 7:30 a.m. and help is available there.

                       7th Grade Math Enhancement

Math Enhancement is a class designed to help give students with less than proficient math scores on the CRT tests taken in March or students who struggle in math a quarter of extra practice on various math skills. We also will spend time working on how to work out story problems and example problems that could possibly appear on the CRT tests in the future.

We will use the chalkboard, smart board, worksheets, group and partner work, and the V-Math computer program to practice skills.  The V-Math can be designed for each individual student’s areas of needs.  They will work problems designed for the areas that they have shown that they need extra practice.

This is a smaller class so I can work more closely with them.  I will be grading some worksheets, quizzes, and tests that I will give on skills we have been covering. There will not be daily grades or assignments.

If a student does not pass Math Enhancement, they may be required to take Math Enhancement again as they need more practice with math skills.
