Health Enhancement

Mr. Amundsen

Ms. Ball

Welcome to Health Enhancement at Washington Middle School. At WMS, we believe that Health Enhancement is an important part of the educational process. The quality and productivity of each student’s life is enhanced through participation in a planned educational program.  Our staff promotes fitness and life-long health by encouraging student’s physical, mental, emotional and social well-being.  Our goal at WMS is to provide students the opportunity to strive for their personal best.  We define the quality of a student’s participation by his/her level of effort, attitude, sportsmanship, cooperation and preparedness.

Health Enhancement combines the disciplines of physical education and health instruction.  Physical education is a class of participation in lifetime, team and individual activities. Health class offers the opportunity to examine your own health behavior and develop plans for improvement. Health class will give you the chance to discover that you, alone, can make the changes in your lifestyle that will result in better health.

                                                 Required Material

Plain white T-shirt or one with physical education logo (available from Jock Stop)

Red gym shorts – no jean shorts or button/snap/zippers

Tennis shoes – non-marking soles; need a pair for inside and outside activities.

If you have one pair they must be cleaned before using the gym floor.

Socks – white, cotton preferred

Combination lock to use on your locker – NO KEYLOCKS

Label all items with a permanent marker (first and last name)

Clothes/towels must be taken home every weekend and laundered.

Showers are encouraged for good personal hygiene.

Optional supplies – towels, soap, shampoo, deodorant, jewelry holder (no glass containers)

All students will dress out for P.E. in the required uniform.

The only excused “no dress” would be a medical excuse from a doctor. Example: a broken bone is usually a six week recovery. If a study hall is available the student is placed there until the doctor gives permission for participation again. Limited participation (after dressing out) would require a note from parent/guardian.

                                   Gym Rules

Remove all jewelry before participation. Lock all valuables in locker.

No gum, candy, sunflower seeds, or drinks in the gym.

No street shoes on the gym floor.

Keep the gym clean.

Proper behavior and language.

Take care of all equipment.  If you break it, you buy it

                 Locker Room Rules

Safety: The floor gets slippery when wet.  Walk carefully; do not run or hurdle the benches.

No hairspray or other aerosol sprays.

Appropriate behavior and language at all times.

Keep valuables locked up or better yet, do not bring them to gym.

Keep the locker room neat and clean.

Dismissal procedure: When the bell rings, the locker room needs to be tidy, lockers closed and locked, everyone seated on the benches and quiet. Teacher may have final announcements and will dismiss class.

                         Health Class Responsibilities

Be on time. Be prepared. Bring all necessary materials.  Turn in your work on time.  Participate in class appropriately and be respectful at all times.
