Welcome to seventh-grade language arts. The work and projects in this class are meant to develop your reading and comprehension skills, grammar skills, the eight parts of speech, diagramming sentences, written responses to stories, writing skills, parts of a story, figurative language, poetry styles, etc.
You will also journal and complete D.O.L.s at least two times a week. We may complete a novel study and other larger projects. The projects tied with this will give you an opportunity to express yourself artistically, as well as developing your vocabulary and comprehension skills.
In addition to the above tasks, there will be a reading requirement EACH QUARTER! (See the genre and book handout).

- The genre wheel is a requirement in seventh-grade language arts. It is due the second week of May 2006, but will be a work in progress throughout the year.
- Select books of at least 75 pages that will fill sections of the genre wheel. (If it’s less than 75 pages, get it okayed by me FIRST)!
- Your goal is to read enough to fill 10 sections of the wheel
- After you complete a book, you will need to take an Accelerated Reader test earning at least an 80%, or you may choose to do a book report earning at least a B-.
- (I have many choices of formats for book reports including everything from written reports, to oral, to using paper bags and illustrations. Depending on the genre you choose, you may want to check on the formats available beforehand! Also, remember, some books you may be interested in reading won’t have an Accelerated Reader disk/test, so you will need to report on those titles.)
- If you earn at least an 80% or a B- on one or the other THEN, you may write it on your genre wheel.

BOOKS
You need to read at least three books of at least 75 pages, (see front side), each quarter. Plan accordingly by reading a little, (5-10 minutes), each day. Then you won’t have to cram the last couple of days every quarter!
- You need to record the books you read on your reading record as soon as you finish them.
- Upon reading those books, you will either take an AR test or complete a book report.
- You will be graded on each book. You must receive at least an 80% on the AR tests, or you will have to answer a few extra comprehension questions to bring up your grade. Also, you must earn a B- or better on the book report.

Welcome to seventh-grade reading! This exploratory class will last nine weeks. The work and projects in this class are meant to develop your vocabulary skills, improve your reading comprehension and responses to questions upon reading, skimming and scanning, spelling, etc.
You will receive your vocabulary/spelling words on Monday; then will do reinforcement activities on Tuesday or Wednesday, and have a vocabulary/spelling test on Friday. You will also read a short story or two throughout the week and answer comprehension, inference, facts/details, summarizing, and main idea questions for each story.
We may get to a novel study during the nine-week period also. The projects tied with this will give you an opportunity to express yourself artistically, as well as developing your vocabulary and comprehension skills.
