                                                                         Expectations:

Students need to come prepared with textbook, notebook, folder, pen, pencil, library book, and agenda every day. I will expect students to have their materials with them each day. They can go to their lockers between classes so they should be able to have what they need.

Students will be given notes with holes or notes in their notebooks for each section of each chapter. They will take a quiz on each section of the chapter and a note quiz where they may use their notes. They should keep the material for each chapter in their folder until the chapter test has been taken and returned.

Homework will be given upon request when a student is absent. I will try to keep regular homework manageable. If the student works in class, there should not be social studies homework every night. Homework completion will be considered part of their grade. They are expected to have it done when it is due.

Students are expected to behave appropriately. Rules are posted on the wall. So far, the classes have been great. We have been able to go through difficult material and they seem to be working hard to understand it.

We have had a great start and I expect that will continue.

        •           Advanced Language Arts
        •                 GRADE 6
    • In the middle school, STEP is an advanced English and reading class and will be graded. Students receive a grade for assigned work on the following scale:
  • Grading Scale
  • 100-93 = A

    92-84 = B

    83-74 = C

    73-65 = D

    64-0 = F

    • Students will receive vocabulary and spelling words and a Daily Oral Language assignment each week. Vocabulary will be from the reading work or assigned words. Words need to be defined and used in a sentence. The weekly spelling list will be commonly misspelled words or those expected to be mastered by the sixth grade. At the end of the week, students will take a test over the vocabulary and spelling words and the Daily Oral Language work done that week. Words are to be kept in a notebook.
    • Students will read one Accelerated Reader book a month. Testing for the Accelerated Reader books will be on the third Monday of each month, except August and December. Accelerated Reader book reading level must be above 5.5 and continue to increase as the year progresses. Reading levels are not grade levels; reading levels are based on a formula that uses content, readability level, and vocabulary. Tests are taken on the computers in the library. If a student chooses a book that does not have a computer-generated quiz, he or she may write a book report using the forms made for reports. The school library and the public library have lists of accelerated reader books. Books are read at home. Within the Accelerated Reader program and the reading section of class, students will work on literary elements, constructed writing, critical thinking, and comprehension skills.
    • Students will cover the same curriculum as the regular sixth grade class although it may not be done at the same time or in the same way. We will move along as the students master material. Usually work will be done at a higher level than most sixth graders accomplish but careful attention is made to the curriculum requirements of the district and the state. The method of working with the curriculum depends of student needs and interest.
    • The first quarter will include an assessment test, review of basic capitalization and punctuation concepts, writing elements, and reading skills. Each quarter will include reading and writing assignments, work with parts of speech, sentence structure and identification, vocabulary and spelling, and Daily Oral Language practice.  A variety of units will be used in the writing to make it interesting and useful for the students. For example, research writing, informational writing, and persuasive writing will be done in a Newscast from the Past in which students create a new broadcast from a past period of time. Reading comprehension and critical thinking may include a court trial as the method of instruction. Units are planned with student need in mind.
